General Information
The San Joaquin
General Hospital is a public institution serving a patient population which
receives little or no other medical care besides that provided by its large
emergency drop-in services, its formal clinics and its inpatient facilities.
The major part of the direct patient care is rendered by the house staff.
The teaching and consulting services are provided by full-time and geographical
full-time faculty and by an attending staff recruited from the local community
and from nearby medical schools.
Perhaps more
than other training programs, ours closely simulates the medical patterns
which the practicing doctor lives with from day-to-day. Our house
staff have to a steady flow of ambulatory and acute medical and surgical
problems to care for on teaching wards. When residency at San Joaquin
General Hospital is complete, House Staff are broadly trained and well
able to enter clinical practice. It is of interest that many of our
graduates have settled in this area.
Educational Programs
The San Joaquin
General Hospital has approved post-graduate training programs (residencies)
in Internal Medicine, Surgery and Family Practice plus a Transitional Intern-ship.
These programs are approved by the Liaison Committee on Graduate Medical
Education, American Medical Association and the American Board of Medical
Specialties.
As a teaching
institution, our goal is to provide superior patient care and excellent
educational opportunities and environment. The Medical Education
Committee coordinates the training programs to obtain maximum benefit from
consultants, attending physicians, and visiting professors. Full-time Chiefs
and Staff supervise each residency program. The teaching staff includes
faculty members from University of California Medical Schools at both Davis
and San Francisco and the Stanford University Medical School. Of
equal importance is the locally talented attending staff who are Board-Eligible
or Certified Specialists and Sub-specialists.
