Life in Stockton
 

The Stockton Area

     San Joaquin General Hospital is located on a park five miles south of downtown Stockton.  The year-round climate is comfortable with the warmest month, July, having an average temperature of 90 degrees and low humidity. The coldest month, December, has an average temperature of 36 degrees.

     San Joaquin County is an agriculturally rich area.  Agriculture is the number one product of San Joaquin County and thus making the county one of the highest agriculture income counties per acre in the nation. San Joaquin County has a population of approximately 500,000 with its County Seat, Stockton, having a population of more than 270, 000. The city has a wide variety of people of various national origins and socioeconomic groups. Among these is a large Hispanic population (24.96%), including many migrant workers. The Southeast Asians (21.45%) include former inhabitants of Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. The rest of the population consists of Caucasians (43.63%), African Americans (9.1%), and Native Americans (0.7%).

Higher Education

     Stockton is the home of the University of the Pacific which has gained recognition for its departments of fine arts, its School of Pharmacy, and its cluster colleges, including colleges of Law and Dentistry. UOP is the first chartered institution of higher learning in California, and now offers more than 100 majors in eight schools. Full-time enrollment is approximately 4,100.

    San Joaquin Delta College, a public junior college, has one of the largest campuses in California. Enrollment is approximately 16,000 students per semester. Students can choose from more than 115 areas of instruction. The college also offers many opportunities to the community for theater presentations, special interest courses, etc.

To the north lies Stockton, Lodi, Woodbridge, Acampo, and Thornton.
To the northeast lies Linden, Lockeford, and Clements.
To the south lies Lathrop, Manteca, and Ripon.
To the southeast lies Escalon.
To the southwest lies the city of Tracy.
 

The Delta

     Stockton is noted as the most inland, deep water seaport on the west coast.  Nestled in Delta lands, it is surrounded by three rivers, plus many inlets and lagoons.  Over 1,000 miles of navigable waterways are used throughout the year for water-skiing, fishing, swimming and boating. The California Delta is a scenic wetland formed by several rivers which is home to many birds and fish. Water sports such as boating, sailing, fishing, and water-skiing are popular.
 

Other Nearby Destinations

     The Bay Area, Yosemite, the High Sierras, Lake Tahoe, Carmel-Monterey and the wine-producing areas of the Napa and Sonoma Valleys are within easy driving distances, usually a one to two hours' drive. The State Capital, Sacramento is located 55 miles to the north. The "River City" offers many other educational, historical, cultural, and recreational opportunities. San Francisco, just 80 miles to the west, offers museums, major league teams, theater, art, and excellent restaurants. Oakland and Berkeley are also near by offering a variety of cultural activities. Lake Tahoe, a two hour drive, is popular for year round water sports, skiing and gaming. Yosemite National Park is also approximately a three hour drive where one can enjoy a wide variety of summer and winter sports.
 

Housing

     A limited number of cottages and mobile home sites are available for rent on the hospital grounds for house staff.  Incoming house staff are assisted in obtaining suitable, reasonably priced housing.
 

Recreation

     On the hospital grounds are located a recreation room for physicians, and a tennis court.  Two public golf courses are within 10 miles of the hospital.

     Stockton also has excellent symphony, ballet and drama groups.
