Welcome to the Surgery Residency Program

San Joaquin General Hospital Surgery Residency Program has been in existence since 1948 and offers a wide diversity of clinical and operative experience.  The Residents are provided a thorough experience in the diagnosis and operative management of a large number of patients.  They obtain substantial clinical and operative experience because we are a small county hospital and offer a vast experience in hands-on training.  They rotate at three hospitals; San Joaquin General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Medical Center of Stockton, which are located 10 miles of each other, and the University of California Davis Medical Center (Sacramento).  The Surgery Residency Program is fully accredited by the Accredited Council Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and matches 2 categorical positions and 1 preliminary position through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and has a total of 11 residents (3-2-2-2-2).  Our program is unique in that you will have tremendous exposure to interesting cases and hands-on operative experience.  The average operative experience is almost double than the American Board of Surgery requirement.  Our program American Board of Surgery Exam first time pass rate is 100% over the past five years.
